Honors for CNBCh UW Researchers at ESAS 2026

This year’s edition of the European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry (ESAS 2026) in Budapest brought two distinctions for research conducted at the Analytical Chemistry Expert Centre of the Biological and Chemical Research Centre, University of Warsaw (CNBCh UW). The authors presenting the awarded posters were Dr. Olha Dushna and Dr. Andrzej Gawor.

 

 

The poster titled “Mass spectrometric insights into selective electrochemical defluorination of fluorinated pharmaceuticals”, whose lead author is Dr. Olha Dushna, was presented during the Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Spectrometry session and received the People’s Choice Award.

The work presents the application of electrochemistry combined with mass spectrometry to study the selective defluorination of fluorinated pharmaceuticals. The obtained results allow for a better understanding of the transformation pathways of these compounds, which is also significant from an environmental protection standpoint.

 

The second awarded poster was titled “The hidden language of proteins in psoriasis: a mass spectrometry perspective”, with Dr. Andrzej Gawor as the lead author. The poster received an Honourable Mention.

The research presented in this study focuses on using mass spectrometry to identify changes occurring at the protein level in psoriasis. It thus contributes to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of this disease. The project is carried out in collaboration with the team from the Clinic of Dermatology at the Military Institute of Medicine – National Research Institute (WIM-PIB).

 

 

Both distinctions are a recognition of the research conducted at the Analytical Expert Centre under the leadership of Prof. Ewa Bulska. The ongoing projects integrate various fields of modern science, including analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, electrochemistry, as well as biomedical and pharmaceutical research. They demonstrate the potential of interdisciplinary analytical methods in solving problems critical to both science and society.

The success achieved during ESAS 2026 is also a great occasion to recall the previous edition of the symposium. ESAS 2024 was hosted by the University of Warsaw at the Biological and Chemical Research Centre (CNBCh UW). The event brought together analytical spectrometry scientists from around the world, creating a platform for presenting cutting-edge research findings, exchanging experience, and establishing scientific collaborations.
