Polish-Vietnamese Tropical Research Centre

Description of the group

The Polish-Vietnamese Tropical Research Centre is a unique, interdisciplinary initiative of scientists from Poland and Vietnam, established as part of a consortium of the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Palaeobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, based on a bilateral agreement between the University of Warsaw and the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources. Our aim is to create a research group that brings together scientists conducting different studies in Southeast Asia.

Research activities

We conduct research in the fields of geology, environmental assessment, reef ecosystems, fossil and modern research, and archaeology.

We also coordinate Polish-Vietnamese scientific cooperation, actively seek contractors and collaborators in Polish scientific institutions, support Polish scientific research, prepare and coordinate biological experiments, organise and coordinate research and training projects for staff of local Vietnamese institutions, provide facilities and logistical support for scientists and academic teachers conducting courses for Vietnamese universities.

Team leader:

Professor Anna Wysocka

My research interests focus on Neogene and Paleogene sedimentation of clastics in terrestrial and marine environments in different regions of the world, from Poland to Ukraine, Iran, Egypt and Vietnam. I have been working at the University of Warsaw for more than 30 years. I have given numerous courses, lectures, seminars and field courses. I have supervised 8 doctoral theses and several dozen master’s, bachelor’s and engineering theses. I have been a principal investigator and contractor in several NCN and NCBiR projects. Since 2023 I have also been working at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Significant Achievements:

I believe that my most important scientific achievement is the reconstruction of the evolution of sedimentary basins related to the Cao Bang-Tien Yen Fault Zone in northern Vietnam. Based on my sedimentological research, it was possible to conclude that in the Oligocene, there was a long-distance lake-fluvial depositional system in Vietnam, controlled by both tectonics and climate. I presented the results of my research in numerous scientific publications and conference presentations.
