In professor Magdalena Skompska’s team the following research topics are being explored:

  • photovoltaic cells based on metal oxides (TiO2, ZnO) with semiconductor sensitizer,
  • hybrid systems TiO2-nanparticles of metals and semiconductors for electro- and photocatalysis.

In professor Marek Szklarczyk’s D.Sc. team the following research topics are being explored:

  • electrodeposition of photoactive films based on silica oxides,
  • polyelectrolyte and polyampholyte multilayers on solid substrates and on biological objects.

The aim of this group is the production and characterization of photovoltaic cells, based on nanostructured titanium dioxide or zinc oxide in the form of nanotubes and nanowires, with deposited nanoparticles of semiconductors such as CdS, CdSe, PbS and with solid or liquid hole acceptor.

Members of this group elaborate new methods of synthesis of hybrid systems, containing metal nanoparticles (Au, Pt, Pd) scattered in conducting polymer matrix or deposited on solid substrate of metal oxide (ZnO, TiO2).

Field of research interest: electrochemistry of conductive polymers, semiconductors and organici hybrid systems and their applications in electrocatalysis, photocatalysis and solar cells. Prof. Skompska is a coauthor of 75 scientific papers and numerous conference presentations. She has completed scientific internships at the University of Bath (UK), University of Leicester (UK), University of Burgundy (France) and University of Freiburg (Germany). She has been a Principal Investigator of eight scientific grants. She supervised 7 PhDs and 18 Master’s theses. She obtained the title of professor in 2011. Researchers from this group study electrochemical deposition of photoactive films, based on silica oxides. The main aim of this project is the characterization of electrodeposition mechanisms, resulting in the production of films based on silica having different oxidation states, in terms of their application to photo-degradation of water. Researchers also work on deposition and characteristics of polyelectrolyte and polyampholyte multilayers on solid substrates and on biological objects and on determination of their physicochemical properties (thickness, adhesion, permeability of deposited layers to different chemical compounds).

The laboratory of Photoelectrochemistry is furnished with i.a.: photoelectrochemical set including: xenon lamp, monochromator, potentiostat, UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer with additional units, FTIR spectrophotometer for analyses of transmission and reflection of solid samples (powder and thin layers deposited on a substrate).
