DESCRIPTION OF THE GROUP

We are interested in ways of treating uncertainties, especially statistical uncertainties, in research, and in cognitive consequences of omitting, hiding and quantifying uncertainties.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

We develop and implement methods for quantitative determination of uncertainties in results. Apart from statistical uncertainties in various areas of biology, our works cover structural resistance of chosen ecological models – dependence of results on particular ways of presenting the general idea in the model. For our studies we use i.a. various digital simulations and reanalysis of data existing in the literature.

We collaborate with Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, Department of Ecological Modelling, Department of Bioinformatics of the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, research group Plant Ecology and Nature Conservation and other research groups recognizing the significance of random uncertainties, especially statistical uncertainties.
